Biological Investigators Discover Wolf Ancestry

Eastern Coyotes Are Becoming Coywolves

By DAVID ZIMMERMAN,  News Correspondent

A handsome, stuffed, wild canine presides over the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife's conference room on Portland Street in St. Johnsbury.

Shot in Glover in 1998 by Eric Potter, the animal, a male, is a puzzler. With its gray, tan, black, and beige pelage, it looks like a coyote. But, as Fish and Wildlife biologist Thomas Decker points out, it weighed 72 pounds at death, and it's built like a wolf.

"It's smaller than a wolf, and larger than a coyote," Decker said. "It's a hybrid" - a cross - "between a large, eastern coyote and a wolf."

Welcome to the first edition of “News” on the new Worcester County Sheep Producer’s web site.  The intent of the “News” page will to serve as a place to deposit articles of interest and to provide direction to other publications, web sites, etc; that provide information of interest.  Some of the sites on our “Links” page will obviously be referenced on a recurring basis.  Sites such as ASI, INFOVETS and   Pipestone Veterinary Clinic are a valuable source of information and should be on any producer’s favorites list.  We will try to give a quick synopsis of any new material contained on these sites and then direct you to the site itself for more information.  In addition, if any of you find articles that you feel are of interest to the membership, just send them along and I will try to get them up in the next posting of “News” on this page.

Let me spend a few minutes talking about this new website.  You will note that there are several pages set up and most of them are fairly straightforward.  “About Us”, “Meetings” and “Officers” are self explanatory.   “Links”, “Resources”, and “Events” require some participation from all members.  As you can see, we have put up a listing of all of the Commonwealth Fairs where sheep are shown on the “Events” page.  I know I have some more events to add to the list and I would assume that each of you does as well.  One caution, you will have to provide us with updated information about events that you submit.  Such things as changes of dates, cancellations, and next years date, are just some of the data points we will need to keep this page current.  If your event is on the page but we cannot find a source of updated information, we will remove it in subsequent years.

The “Links” page is for ready access to websites that are of general interest to our membership.  Websites that can be accessed through other, already linked, sites will be omitted.  An example would be individual breed associations which can be found on the ASI website.

“Resources” is where the most help is needed.  This page should cover all of our Vets, Feed Stores, Suppliers, Processors and any of the other plethora of contacts we all have.

I am contemplating selling listings on our “Resources” and “Links” pages to businesses who might profit from being listed on our website.  As an example, I would recommend we charge $20 per year for listings on the Resource page for Vets, Feed Stores, Other Suppliers, etc; that do not have a web site of their own.  If they want to be on the “Links” page so that readers can directly access their site from our site, then the fare would be $50 a year.  The $50 dollars would include the “link” as well as a listing on the “Resources” page.  I see this approach as helping to offset the cost of being on the Internet and the cost of site revisions and updates.  I would like some feedback on this concept.
